17th Aug 2011
County Antrim Table Tennis League 33RD Annual General Meeting 6th June 2011 – 8pm Ballymarlow Community Hall, Ballymena In attendance:Emma Nicholl, Norman McBride (Academy Strongtower); Ian Davies (Ballyclare Methodist); Anselm Brankin, Brian Bonnar (Coleraine); Paul McGuigan, Gary McClelland, Brian Orr (Flash in the Pan); Stephen Clarke, Alvis Wright, Michael Maguire (Knockagh). 1. Apologies: Ciaron Nelson, David Witherspoon, Wayne Charleton (Academy Strongtower); Philip Jamison, Richard Davies (Ballyclare Methodist); Colin Clements, Mark Clements (Knockagh). 2. Minutes of previous AGM meeting: The minutes of the 2010 AGM agreed and adopted. 3. Minutes of the league meeting 17th March 2011: Agreed. 4. Chairman’s opening comments / Report: The Treasurer, in the absence of the Chairman, read out a prepared Report from the Chairman. The Chairman thanked the committee for an enjoyable and trouble free season with special thanks to the main office bearers – Norman McBride, Michael Maguire and Stephen Clarke - for their dedication throughout the season. Winners were congratulated and encouragement given to those who won nothing stating “there is always next year”. The Chairman then gave his thoughts on the League – past, present and future. The main thrust of his thoughts was his desire to see more clubs in the league and greater club representation in the committee. 5. The Secretary’s Report The Secretary provided each representative with a written record of the 2010/2011 season including reports on competitions, league, cups and dinner. The Secretary thanked the main office bearers and committee for their hard work and assistance throughout the year. League, cup and tournament winners were congratulated with Amanda Mogey and Pawel Sulkowski receiving special mention due to their successes in Provincial and National competitions. The Secretary highlighted three areas were further progress could be made. First, the problem of too few clubs could be partially resolved by appointing a Development Officer and liaising with the TT Ulster Development officers. Increased coaching in schools and clubs could also facilitate greater participation with the possible offshoot of more teams. Secondly, the late nights at the league tournaments could be solved by having the tournaments split over more venues and over a greater period of time – nights separated by a month rather than the usual week of events would facilitate better attendances. Lastly, the need for better attendance at league committees – especially from younger representatives was highlighted. Succession planning should be encouraged and the use of sub committees could help take the load off the main league committee. 6. Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer intimated that this would be his last Report as he was taking a back seat due to increased family commitments associated with his new role as a grandfather. As usual Mike produced a produced a detailed profit and loss report that showed the league to be in a healthy financial footing thanks to his astute financial management over the years. Michael thanked the honorary auditor Mark Clements for his continued auditing of the funds. The Secretary thanked Michael for his long years of service both as Treasurer and Secretary and wished him the best for the equally demanding role as grandparent. 7. Election of Office Bearers: The Treasurer, after many years of service, intimated that he would not be seeking re-election. The new list of County Antrim Table Tennis League Officers, as agreed unanimously, was as follows: CHAIRPERSON – Colin Clements (Knockagh) PRESIDENT – Alvis Wright (Knockagh) SECRETARY – Norman McBride (Academy Strongtower) TREASURER – Paul McGuiggan (Flash in the Pan) MATCH SECRETARY – Stephen Clarke (Knockagh) DEVELOPMENT OFFICER / Designated Child Protection Officer – Emma Nicholl (Academy Strongtower) AUDITOR – Mark Clements (Knockagh) TRUSTEES – Mike Maguire (Knockagh), Danka Ireland (Ballyclare Methodist), and Steve Ferson (Knockagh), ASSISTANT SECRETARY – Brian Bonnar (Coleraine) ASSISTANT TREASURER – Brian Orr (Flash in the Pan) TROPHY SECRETARY – Ian Davies (Ballyclare Methodist) 8. Rule Changes: Meeting agreed that the paragraphs relating to Objectives and Constitution should be covered under one rule - rule 2. It previously was split between two rules – rule 2 and rule 3. The meeting agreed that rule 7.9 (b) should remove” latest 8pm” as some clubs scheduled time is, by necessity, 8.15pm. The meeting decided to keep “in any order” in rule 7.11. The meeting decided by the narrowest of margins 7 to 6 – to keep the 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 1 point for a loss, 0 points for failure to turn up for another year. The scoring system to be re-examined again at 2012’s AGM. The proposed £5 fine for teams failing to fulfil a fixture was not carried. No change to the fees structure was proposed. The deadline of the 31st October for payment of league fees (rule 8.1) to be adhered to. 9. Tournaments: The newly appointed Trophy Secretary to investigate the whereabouts of the Ladies Doubles trophy lost within the last four years. If no trophy is found the league is to purchase a new trophy to be presented to the 2011/12 winners. A stock take of trophies should be conducted this season to ascertain which trophies need replaced / repaired. The County Antrim Open is to continue to be operated by the League. The League continues to encourage clubs to organise tournaments for the league players. The league will run its tournaments (rule 10) throughout the season to increase participation in all events. 10. AOB: The league is willing to accept the ball sponsorship offered by Andrew Dennison Sports. A sub-committee comprising Stephen Clarke, Brian Bonnar, Paul McGuiggan and Norman McBride – but open to other interested league members - is to liaise over the summer with Gervis Knox with the objective of having a new website up and running for the 2011/12 season. The sub-committee is to report back to the first full league committee meeting in September/October 2011. Advertising on this website to be facilitate. £250 to be provided for the initial set up of the web page. The AGM expressed a desire to start the league earlier – mid October if possible. The AGM intimated its desire for players to use legal bats – red/black rubbers - but the enforcement of same would be left to individual clubs. The new Treasurer – Paul McGuiggan - to liaise with the past Treasurer – Mike Maguire - to arrange the transfer of funds into a new bank account to be set up by Paul McGuiggan – agreed that a Bank of Ireland A/C be set up. The AGM requested that the new account has two signatories – Brian Orr and the new Treasurer, Paul McGuiggan. The members expressed their thanks for the tea and buns provided at the commencement of the AGM. 11. Date of next meeting: The exact date was left to the Secretary to arrange – with a preference for late September/early October 2011. The meeting ended at 10.30 pmCATTL 2011 FINAL PLACINGS AND DINNER

World Individual T T Championships Rotterdam
17th Aug 2011
“County Antrim’s Amanda Mogey Shines on World Stage A strong Irish team travelled to the Netherlands last week to represent their country in the World Individual Championships. Under the guidance of NPC Peter Nilsson, County Antrim’s Amanda Mogey produced the stand-out performances for the team. Below, ITTA Web summarises the main results of the event: MensIn the preliminary group, National Champion John Murphy recorded a straight sets victory over Yemen’s AL-MAHAQERI, before losing 1:4 to PLATONOV of Belarus. Paul McCreery lost both games of his group, losing in a 3:4 battle against MPEMBA of Ivory Coast and 1:4 to Iran’s AKHLAGHPASAND.In the consolation event, John Murphy took a 3:0 victory over MUKTAR, before being eliminated by Canada’s HINSE in the last 64.McCreery was eliminated by Israeli BEN ARI 2:3 to conclude his involvement in the Singles event. Both players’ rankings have been affected negatively by this tournament, with McCreery now at 735, while Murphy slips back to 959.WomensThe youngest member of the squad, Ashley Givan lost both matches in her preliminary group, losing 3:4 to GODOY of Guatemala and in straight sets to Slovenian SAFRAN. Amanda Mogey recorded a win in her preliminary group over Costa Rica’s Martinez, before succumbing to TODOROVIC of Serbia 1:4.In the consolation event, Givan was eliminated at the first stage, despite a battling performance against VESKOVSKA of MKD. This will hopefully be the first of many World Championships for the Ulster Junior and she will surely benefit from the experience of playing among the world’s elite. Mogey also entered the consolation event and produced a string of impressive performances. In the 1st Round, she defeated BALLOUCHY of Morocco 3:0. This set up a tight match with LOPEZ of Guatemala – both players at a similar point on the World Ranking list. Mogey recovered from losing the 1st set to claim a 3:1 victory. In the Round of 32, TCHERESTOVA of Jordan was also put away by a 3:1 scoreline. A confident Mogey then faced MEDINA of Colombia, a player ranked hundreds of places above her in the ITTF Rankings at WR238. Undaunted, she dismantled the South American 3:0 – without doubt her best international result to date. Mogey’s incredible run eventually came to a halt at the Quarter Final stage – American PRACHI eliminating her in straight sets. On foot of her performances, Mogey now moves up almost 100 places in the World Rankings – now at 738. Ashley Givan is ranked at 1134. Well done to the entire team and especially Amanda Mogey who will now enjoy a well deserved Summer break before pre-season in July and coaching at Ballymena Academy in a proposed summer scheme – details later.”NORTH ANTRIM OPEN 2011
17th Aug 2011
“Flawless Peter Graham wins the North Antrim Table Tennis Open. An excellent turn out of forty competitors travelled to the luxurious environs of Ballymena Academy to participate in the 2011 North Antrim Open. A new champion was assured as last year’s winner Leo Stynen from Germany was studying for his Final examinations. But new Ulster number one Peter Graham headed the seeding along with Ulster number two Philip Wallace, with Ulster’s top lady Amanda Mogey, Ulster’s top veteran Pawel Sulkowski and Wexford’s Brian Devereux all in attendance hoping to claim the vacant title. To qualify for the Open event the players had to top a group of five players. Anyone in second place qualified for the Grade two event, those third in their groups qualified for the Grade three event and fourth and fifth placed places battled out for the Grade Four event. In the group stages the top seed Peter Graham qualified from group one unscathed with convincing victories over Ballymena’s Connor White, Coleraine’s James Dillon, Larne’s Byron Graham and Wexford’s Sabina Devereux.“Fast” Phil Wallace was top of group two defeating Ballyclare’s Hannah Ireland, Dublin’s Anthony Dobbs, Banbridge’s Stephen Turkington and Ulster veteran Roy Coard. The first upset came in Group three with Wexford’s Brian Devereux finishing second to Pawel Sulkowski who went on to defeat Portrush’s Anselm Brankin, Ballymena’s Jonny Wilson and Robin Agnew.Group four had the talented Amanda Mogey finish top with victories over Ulster number ten lady Emma Nicholl, Ballymena’s Adam Greer, Ballyclare veteran Ian Davies and Belfast’s Andrew Loane.Group five was a real tough group with Dawid Sulkowski playing excellent table tennis to take top spot defeating County Antrim finalist Philip Jamison, Ballymena defender Andrew Herbison, Banbridge’s Barry Dickson and Arnold Morgan. In Group six Academy Strongtower’s Gary Crawford qualified by defeating Belfast’s Rita Okotebe, Ballymena’s Jimmy O’Hara, Belfast’s Ted Mehaffey and Ballyclare’s Richard Davies.Group seven had top seed Gervis Knox comfortably progress with wins over Ballyclare’s talented Andrew Davies, Ballymena’s Adam McIlmoyle, Belfast’s Mark Gordon and Ballymoney’s Neil Robinson. The eighth and final group almost brought an upset as Academy Strongtower’s Mark McAllister let two match points slip against eventual group winner Georgi Hubenov. Hubenov went on to defeat Newtownabbey’s Thomas Davies, Ballymena starlet Peter McCrum and Ballymoney veteran Gary McClelland. The eight qualifiers then formed two further groups with the top two in each group progressing to the semi- finals. The first group saw top seed Peter Graham and fourth seed Amanda Mogey progress to the semi final stages with Dawid Sulkowski and Georgi Hubenov finishing in third and fourth spots respectively. Indeed, the unseeded Sulkowski was a tad unlucky not to progress as he took a set off Graham and lost 12-10 in the fifth set against Mogey. The second group provided a few shocks as Gervis Knox topped the group with the unseeded Pawel Sulkowski finishing second both above number two seed Philip Wallace who secured third spot above his arch-rival Gary Crawford. The semi-final saw Peter Graham progress in straight sets to the final with a fine win over Pawel Sulkowski. The other semi-final had Amanda Mogey battling against an inspired Gervis Know. The match was a very close affair with two like minded attacking players going toe to toe across the table. However it was Amanda Mogey who prevailed with her devastating smashes penetrating Knox’s defences in the deciding game.Unfortunately Amanda couldn’t repeat the form of her semi-final victory and Peter Graham clinched the North Antrim title in straight sets. All in all a magnificent display by Graham who only dropped one set in the nine matches he played. But Mogey should take much credit for reaching the final of this prestigious ranking tournament and taking numerous top scalps in the process. The Grade two event went to Wexford’s Brian Devereux who defeated Philip Jamison in the semi-final. In the final he defeated Academy Strongtower’s Mark McAllister who had edged passed Andrew Davies in his semi-final.The Grade three event was won by “Battling” Barry Dickson from Banbridge who defeated Robin Agnew in the semi final and veteran Ted Mehaffey in the final. Ted had reached the final after winning a monumental five set thriller against his old adversary Byron Graham. The Grade four semi finals were contested between Mark Gordon, Anselm Brankin, Arnold Morgan and Academy Strongtower’s Peter McCrum. Mark Gordon won a thrilling five setter against Anselm Brankin while Arnold proved too experienced for the ever improving McCrum. The final was another five set cracker with Gordon managing to outlast Morgan in a game of hit and counter hit.Brian Orr, the tournament referee, thanked all the competitors for their sporting behaviour, Ballymena Academy and host club Academy Strongtower for the use of the halls, Jimmy O’Hara for doing the presentations and Norman McBride for the hard work of arranging and running the tournament.INTER PROVINCIAL 2011
17th Aug 2011
Inter – Provincial tournament - DublinPress release – Ballymena Times/Guardian “Mogey and Sulkowski run riot in Dublin! The County Antrim TT League had two players representing Ulster in last weekend’s Inter Provincial championships held in UCD, Dublin.Ulster retained the Senior Inter-provincial table tennis shield with an emphatic final 6-2 victory over arch-rivals Leinster in the final having earlier defeated Connaught 10-0 and Munster 9-1. Starring for the Senior Ulster squad was County Antrim TT League star Amanda Mogey who remained undefeated throughout the three series event – a feat also accomplished by Clogher’s Ashley Robinson and Dungannon’s Ashley Givan.County Antrim TT League’s Pawel Sulkowski represented Ulster in the Veteran’s event and he also remained undefeated throughout the tournament which must now earn him the accolade of Ireland’s top veteran table tennis player. Unfortunately for Pawel the gold medal in the veteran’s event went to Leinster who defeated Ulster 5 - 4 in the final with Ulster’s Willie Cherry squandering three match points against Irish table tennis legend Tommy Caffrey – points that would have wrestled the title away from Leinster. The Ulster veterans had previously defeated Connaught 7-2 and Munster 9-0. Pawel had some consolation in winning the silver medal and, more significantly, winning the prestigious Tommy Caffrey Award for “Best Player”.County Antrim had no representatives in Ulster’s Under 21s but the team performed admirably mirroring the veterans by taking the silver medal – just losing out 5-4 in the final to a strong Leinster squad. Perhaps we need to be more pro-active with junior coaching in the County“
